Why it matters

If waste from your home is fly-tipped, you can be fined, even if you paid someone else to take it away. This is called the household waste duty of care. A cheap clearance from an unregistered van can end up costing far more.

How to check

  1. Ask the clearance business for their waste carrier registration number.
  2. Check it on the Environment Agency public register of waste carriers.
  3. Make sure the name matches the business you are dealing with.
  4. Ask where your waste is going, and keep your receipt.

The register is on GOV.UK: search waste carriers and brokers.

Signs to be wary of

  • A price that seems far too low
  • No business name, address or landline
  • No receipt or paperwork
  • Cash only with no details
